When we grasp His kindness, it breaks our hearts to disappoint Him. Faith works through love, and as 1 John reminds us, love casts out fear. This is a completely different starting point than obeying out of obligation; it’s the heart of genuine Christian life.

God's Goodness - The Path to Repentance and Love
In this week’s message from Luke 6:1-5, Pastor Benjamin Winslett explores An Encounter with Legalism, one of several moments when the Pharisees criticized Jesus and His disciples. When the disciples plucked and broke up grain to eat on the Sabbath, the Pharisees condemned them for breaking the law, when it was really their preconceived notions which had been violated. Yet Jesus reminded them that mercy and human need come before rigid regulation, and that He Himself is Lord of the Sabbath.

Join us as we consider what true Sabbath rest means, the heart behind obedience, and how the gospel delivers us from judgmentalism into grace, forgiveness, and peace with God.

An Encounter with Legalism
Jesus warned His followers, “When you see armies surrounding Jerusalem, know that her desolation is near.” He told them to flee without delay—to leave their homes and possessions behind. History confirms that believers who trusted His words did just that. When the Roman armies came in 70 A.D., Christians remembered Christ’s prophecy and escaped unharmed. His warning was both mercy and proof that His word never fails.

Jesus' Warning - Escape the Holy City's Fall!
When Jesus first called His disciples into the gospel ministry, he met them not in a religious house, but in their place of employment as they were fishing in the Sea of Galilee. In this episode of Words of Grace, we turn to Luke chapter 5 and Jesus’ instruction to Peter to cast his net one more time, setting up a miracle that would forever impact the direction of Peter’s life. While indeed a miracle, this interaction served as a metaphor for the work these men would engage in for the rest of their days: Fishing for men.

Fishers of Men
There is such a thing as righteous indignation—anger for just causes, like injustice or sin. But Jesus warned against anger without a cause, the kind that springs from bitterness, spite, or self-centeredness. Some people are angry simply because their pride is wounded. That kind of selfish anger violates the sixth commandment, “Thou shalt not kill.” Christ calls us to examine our hearts and lay aside anger that has no righteous reason.

Righteous Indignation vs Self Centered Anger
God’s law was always deeper than outward obedience. The religious leaders of Jesus’ day twisted it with loopholes and excuses to justify sin—but Christ revealed its true intent. The law doesn’t just condemn actions like murder or adultery; it reaches the thoughts and motives of the heart. Bitterness, hatred, and lust are violations of God’s holiness. Jesus showed that the law is far more searching—and far more condemning—than we might realize.

Jesus' Teachings Condemning Bad Behavior & Anger
Jesus taught that murder isn’t just an outward act—it begins in the heart. If I’m angry or bitter without a cause, or if my response far exceeds what’s deserved, I’m breaking the commandment, “Thou shalt not kill.” We often view murder as the worst possible crime, but Christ revealed that sinful anger makes us guilty before God. This truth exposes humanity’s total depravity and reminds us of our desperate need for the Savior, Jesus Christ, who came to die for sinners.

Why Anger Without a Cause Is Sin Against God
Jesus revealed that sin begins in the heart. If I secretly harbor bitterness, I’ve broken the commandment against murder. If I’ve lusted in my heart, I’ve violated the commandment against adultery. True holiness isn’t merely outward—it’s inward. The Pharisees looked clean on the outside but were filled with corruption within. Christ’s teaching exposes the futility of self-righteousness and reminds us that our only hope is His righteousness, not our own.

Inner Holiness - Jesus' Radical Call to Heart Transformation
Scripture teaches that government exists to punish evildoers and protect the innocent. Some crimes are so horrific—mass murderers like Adolf Hitler, habitual rapists, or child abusers—that they leave behind a trail of victims and pose an ongoing danger to society. In such cases, the death penalty is not vengeance but justice. As Romans 13 says, rulers “bear not the sword in vain.”

Danger: The Truth of Violent, Wicked Criminals
“Thou shalt not kill” doesn’t mean a person can never take a life under any circumstance. Scripture never forbids just defense—whether of one’s family, home, or nation. The Bible isn’t pacifistic in that sense. From the Old Testament’s many battles to our moral duty to protect loved ones, God never called self-defense a sin. The commandment refers specifically to murder—the unjust taking of life—not the defense of innocent life or a just war.

Bible & Warfare - Does God Advocate Total Pacifism?
When Jesus called His first disciples, He didn’t begin with a pulpit—but a fishing boat. In this sermon from Luke 5:1–11, Pastor Benjamin Winslett explores Christ’s miraculous call to Peter and the others, revealing how this moment illustrated both their future ministry and ours as followers of Christ. What does it mean to be a “fisher of men”? How does this passage connect to the personal and public callings of God in a believer’s life?

From Peter’s awe-filled confession to Christ’s call to forsake all and follow Him, this message reminds us that the Lord’s work is accomplished in His strength, at His direction, and for His glory.

🎣 Takeaway: Pray for your minister. Encourage the preachers you know. Help him fish—stay in the boat, and if you fall out, get in the net.

Fishers of Men | Luke 5
When Jesus drove the money changers and livestock from the temple, He wasn’t acting out of uncontrolled rage but holy zeal. In John 2, He cleansed the temple at the beginning of His ministry—and again in Matthew 21 before His crucifixion. Some claim John misplaced the story, but Scripture shows that Jesus purged the temple twice. His passion for God’s house consumed Him. The temple was meant to be a house of prayer, not a house of merchandise.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple - Twice! Shocking Truth!
In this week’s episode of Words of Grace, Benjamin Winslett brings a classic hymn title to life in his message, “Grace, ’Tis a Charming Sound.” Human nature tells us that we get what we deserve. But, Scripture paints a very different picture of how sinners are saved. From Romans 3 to Ephesians 2, Pastor Winslett explains that salvation cannot come by human effort. Instead, the undeniable message of the gospel is that we are saved by grace alone—unmerited favor from a sovereign God.

Listen now and be refreshed by the sweet sound of God’s sovereign grace!

Grace ‘Tis a Charming Sound
Jesus warned against being angry without a cause. That same sin marked His enemies. John 15 tells us they hated Him without a cause—a direct fulfillment of prophecies from Psalm 35:19 and Psalm 69:4. Over 360 prophecies point to Christ in the Old Testament, including these two that reveal His perfect innocence. He never did wrong—He only did right—and yet He was hated. So when we hate a brother without cause, we mirror those who opposed Jesus Himself. That’s how serious this sin is.

Jesus' Prophecies - They Hated Him Without Cause #psalms #prophecy
All humanity is fallen and completely in sin—proof of our need for the Savior, Jesus Christ. Scripture teaches that anger itself isn’t always wrong. If there’s such a thing as anger without a cause, then by necessity, there must also be just causes for anger. There are indeed things in this world that should make us angry. After all, anger—when righteous—is a divine attribute of God Himself.
