Eye for Eye, Tooth for Tooth

Eye for Eye, Tooth for Tooth (Matthew 5:38-42)
In this weekend’s broadcast of Words of Grace, Pastor Benjamin Winslett explores Jesus’ powerful teachings on forgiveness and charity from the Sermon on the Mount. What does it truly mean to turn the other cheek, go the extra mile, and give to those who ask? These verses confront our natural instincts for retaliation and call us to reflect the gracious heart of Christ—even in difficult circumstances.

As we unpack these commands, we’re reminded that Jesus not only taught these truths but perfectly lived them. He didn’t resist evil, but willingly endured the cross for us. This message calls us not only to strive for personal obedience but to rest in the righteousness of the One who fulfilled the law on our behalf.

A Deeper Understanding of the 6th Commandment

In today’s broadcast of Words of Grace, Pastor Ben Winslett continues our study through the Sermon on the Mount by examining Christ’s words concerning the commandment, “Thou shalt not kill.” While many in Jesus’ day limited this command to literal murder, Jesus revealed its deeper meaning—warning against unrighteous anger, insults, and heart-level contempt.

We consider how Scripture distinguishes between justified killing in cases of justice or war and the sin of murder. But most importantly, we reflect on Christ’s call to examine our hearts. Anger without cause, calling someone “Raca,” or condemning a person as worthless or lost—all reveal a deeper guilt that the Law always intended to expose.

This message also emphasizes the urgency of reconciliation. Jesus teaches that making peace with our brother is more important than offering a gift at the altar. Join us as we unpack the holiness of God’s Law and our need for Christ’s righteousness, both imputed and worked in us through grace.
