The Quiet but Bold Disciple — Part 1

In this message, we begin a study of the Apostle John, one of the “sons of thunder” who is often overshadowed by the more outspoken Apostle Peter. Yet as we follow John through the Gospel accounts, we discover a disciple whose quiet and humble character was accompanied by remarkable boldness and faithfulness.

We consider the friendship and contrasts between Peter and John, John’s early calling to follow Jesus, and the remarkable way he refers to himself throughout his Gospel as “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” We also examine John’s close proximity to Christ at the Last Supper and his presence during Jesus’ arrest and trial, where his quiet courage stands in striking contrast to Peter’s impulsiveness and denial.

The life of John reminds us that Christian faithfulness does not always look loud or prominent. There is a place for the quiet disciple who simply stays close to Jesus, follows Him, and remains faithful. Continue reading “The Quiet but Bold Disciple — Part 1”

The God of Peace (Part 1)

The Bible speaks of peace hundreds of times, but what does true peace really mean? Is it merely the absence of conflict, or is there something far deeper? In this first installment of a two-part message from the pulpit of Flint River Primitive Baptist Church, we begin a biblical study of peace from Genesis to Revelation.

This week, we’ll examine the Old Testament concept of peace, the meaning of shalom, the peace offering under the Law, and the transition to the New Testament emphasis on peace with God through Jesus Christ. We’ll also consider why Scripture calls the Lord the God of Peace, why Christ is the Prince of Peace, and how lasting peace is rooted in God’s own character rather than in the changing circumstances of this world.

Join us next week as we conclude this study by considering the peace of God in the believer’s life, reconciliation through Christ, assurance of salvation, and our calling to pursue peace with others.

Lessons from the Seventy

In Luke chapter 10, the Lord appointed seventy disciples and sent them ahead of Him into the places He would soon visit. We don’t know their names, and Scripture is mostly silent about what became of them afterward, but the lessons from their mission are clear and searching.

In this episode of Words of Grace, Benjamin Winslett looks at the Lord’s instructions to these men and what they teach us about gospel labor, the reality of opposition, and the present power of the Kingdom of God. The harvest is still great. Laborers are still few. And while the seventy returned rejoicing in what they were able to do, Jesus pointed them to a far greater joy, that their names were written in heaven.

Join us as we consider these enduring lessons from the seventy in Luke 10:1–20.

The Importance of Making Disciples

In today’s edition of Words of Grace, Pastor Benjamin Winslett turns our attention to the Great Commission — the lasting instruction Jesus gave His disciples before ascending into heaven. Each gospel record closes with a similar theme: the crucifixion, the resurrection, the commission, and the ascension.

Though salvation is entirely the Lord’s work, it is through the preaching of the gospel that disciples are made from among those whom God has quickened. Pastor Winslett explores the unique emphases in each Gospel account, the apostolic authority of this commission, and the continuing responsibility of the church to support the ministry through prayer, service, and encouragement.

Join us as we reflect on this sacred charge and the pattern seen throughout the book of Acts, where the Lord added daily to the church through faithful gospel labor.

Statements of God’s Sovereignty from Isaiah

The book of Isaiah among one of the most cited sources from the Old Testament, and for good reason. While Isaiah deals with contemporary issues to Israel, he also foretold many world events as well as giving many details about the coming Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Another theme of Isaiah, as we explore in today’s program, is the concept of God’s identity and sovereignty. Amidst a backdrop of coming captivity and restoration, God reveals His power, to the comfort of His people.

Biblical Principles for the Care of the Poor

Concepts such as poverty and the poor are often hijacked by political figures and redefined as mere statistics. In reality, poor people are just that – human beings with needs. While scripture does condemn laziness, it also consistently commands those with material resources to help and care for the impoverished.

Join us for this episode of Words of Grace, as Ben Winslett shares abundant scriptural references throughout the entire Bible revealing God’s heart on the matter of caring for the poor.
