Who Exactly is Shiloh?

In this Christmas-season episode of Words of Grace, we consider one of the earliest and most beautiful promises of Christ found in the Old Testament. From Jacob’s prophetic words in Genesis 49, we’re introduced to the mysterious name Shiloh—the One to whom the gathering of the people would be, long understood as a promise of the coming Messiah.

We then follow that promise into the book of Isaiah, where the child to be born is revealed as Emmanuel, God with us—the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, and the Prince of Peace. The episode concludes in Psalm 8, reflecting on the wonder of the incarnation: that the eternal Son of God humbled Himself, becoming a little lower than the angels, taking on our humanity to redeem His people.

As you listen, may your heart be drawn not only to the warmth of the Christmas season, but to the ancient promises that find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Crushing the Head of the Serpent

In this episode of Words of Grace, Pastor Benjamin Winslett takes us to Genesis 1–3 to consider the earliest proclamation of the gospel and God’s promise of redemption. From the goodness of creation, to the fall of our first parents, Scripture reveals Christ as the Seed of the Woman who would crush the serpent’s head.

Genesis 3:15, often called the protoevangelium or first gospel, points forward to the virgin birth, the incarnation of the Son of God, and Christ’s decisive victory over Satan. In the garden, we see God seeking the sinner, providing a covering through the shedding of blood, and preaching the gospel Himself – establishing the pattern of salvation by grace.

The Eternal Sonship of Christ

The most important question in history is “who is Jesus Christ?” Simply put, Jesus’ identity as the messiah, the Christ, the incarnate Word, and God’s only Son is the basis for our hope for salvation from sin and everlasting life. In light of this fact, a branch of theology we call “Christology” is something we want to get right.

In today’s broadcast, our focus is the Eternal Sonship of Christ. While this is a nonnegotiable doctrine to Christians from the time of Christ onward, some in recent years have erred, rejected this notion. In this edition of Words of Grace, Pastor Winslett speaks to the history of this debate as well as the scriptural soundness of this doctrine.

The Biblical Significance of Unleavened Bread

In both the Old Testament and New Testament, unleavened bread has a special, biblical significance. Initially, it was to be used in the Feast of Unleavened Bread that accompanied Passover. But in the New Testament, it was repurposed as an item to be used in The Lord’s Supper, as Christ our Passover was slain for us. Join us for this interesting study of Unleavened Bread from both the Old and New Testaments.

How is Jesus the Only Begotten?

Jesus’ title as God’s “only begotten Son” is as historic as the New Testament itself, and is common language used in commentaries, sermons, creeds and confessions all through church history. However, in recent years, so-called New Testament Greek experts and bible translators have attempted, in vain, to redefine that as something else. In this broadcast, Ben Winslett considers the phrase from several angles, including the underlying Greek, ancient sources, and related words. Suffice it to say, this faithful title of “the only begotten Son” needs no amending!

The Real Christ

Colossians, though not Paul’s longest work by far, is extremely rich in Christology, to say the least. From chapter 1, we learn that Jesus was God incarnate, the creator of all things, the ruler of the universe, and the head of the church. In this edition of Words of Grace, we share a recent message from Flint River on these powerful statements of Christology.
